The Occupation

In the fifth week of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the wealthy are grumbling and pushing back. The grumbling started in Washington where the House has its own millionaires club. Now some of the wealthy individuals running for president are calling the protestors unpatriotic, un-American and nothing but a mob. In the Civics class that is no longer taught in high school, we were told just the opposite: that not only was protest and involvment patriotic, but that it was a necessity for a democracy.

Last week, someone posted a sign in the window of the Chicago Board of Trade where the street protestors could see it saying, "We Are The One Percent".

I wonder if it's still there. The protestors are.

I believe as Americans, it is not only our right to protest, it is our duty. I think the protest should be in Washington though, not wall street. The rich are simply taking advantage of our system, which we are all free to do if we have the means.

The great thing about this protest is that they're making a lot of noise, and just maybe, a revolution can be averted if the politicians act. They must do something, anything.

Charlie,
I agree that it should be going on in Washington as well.

I guess John Boehner had his golf game interrupted today by protestors. I thought that was pretty funny. Get 'em where it really hurts!

What the rich never seem to realize until it's too late is that a society in which the richer ARE getting richer while the rest are losing ground is a society that's ripe for revolution.

Travener,
Right. Exactly right. Thanks!

Jon Stewart did a piece on this where he examined Republicans' reaction to the Tea Party movement as opposed to the Occupiers.

They exhort conservative extremists to "take back America" but demonize those calling for universal healthcare. It's unreal.

Searching,
Exactly! Isn't that bizarre? Publicans complain that Democrats are supporting the occupiers but fail to mention that the Koch Brothers of Texas, two of the richest people in the world, completely bankrolled the entire Tea Party fiasco. And for what end? To lower their taxes, deregulate their dirty industries, and to gut the public sector. Yet they call themselves patriotic. Thanks for commenting.
