Boomerang (Friday Flash 55)

Even as a child, she was drawn to the night
when the air was soft and fraught with life.
He, too, a child of twilight—
mysterious boy boomerang in his belt.

Was my father’s, he said,
dog circling, divining the night air.
Fingers entwined, he taught her to throw
so it would always come back.

If it's Friday, or Friday Eve, it's time for Flash, Flash 55.  This weekly event is hosted by the G-Man who loves fiction with a plot and 55 words.

Oh, this was so lovely! And your header shot is amazing, Yvonne! I've always been partial to the night...and my daughter brought back some boomerangs from Australia and we had a glorious afternoon trying our best to make them come back. :)

They make a sweet couple, like they've already figured out how to get their love to always come whistling back.

I can't even through a frisbee - a boomerang is so cool! Gorgeous sunset.

you've captured a moment, Yvonne, fraught with promise and memory ~

Talon,
Thanks. My Dad brought one back too. I wish he would've brought back one for all of us kids. I love taking pictures of the sunset and searched and searched through my folders for that one. I thought it would set the scene for Boomerang. They are cool (no amazing!)instruments. Thanks so much.

Alice,
Thank you. They're a fledgling couple, but working at it hard!:)

Margaret,
I can throw a frisbee but a boomerang would never come back for me. Thanks.

Grapeling,
Thanks so much!!

smiles...pretty cool...i like the symbolism of the boomerang...used to have one a long time ago but never got great at it....

A right-handed flings a frisbee with a 'back-hand' from the left to the right. He needs to throw a 'fore-hand' for a boomerang from right to left.It must be held flat with both ends facing him before throwing. It works somehow! Wonderful write Yvonne!

I like your poem, especially 'so it would always come back'.

A beautiful memory. Nice one.

I love this--interpretation would only dilute it, so I'll merely say, an excellent poem, Yvonne, and thank you for sharing it.

Brian,
Thanks. I've been thinking about a lost boomerang for some time, story ideas swirling, then I thought I could start with a poem.

Hank,
Well, I never really knew how to do it though I've held one and seen others throw it with some success. Thank you!!

Gabriella,
Thank you so much. I appreciate it!

Anthony,
Thank you and so nice to see you again.

Hedgewitch,
Thank you! Very much.

A lovely idea for a '55. A touching write! I always wanted to be able to throw a boomerang, but never had the opportunity. I'd guess it isn't easy.

How beautiful. You're skillful in creating imagery and telling a story in 55!

Oh, this is my favorite of yours so far. As a lifelong night owl (made my school and work years difficult!) I find this celebration one of true wonder.
As a funny aside, my uncle (now deceased) long ago decided to go into the toy business, while keeping his day job. He somehow became a seller of boomerangs, much to my aunt's discontent and horror! He commissioned my sister and me, then young teens, to come to the county fair in Oakland and demonstrate the things. No training, of course. We were duds at the whole thing, I doubt he sold many boomerangs that day. His "toy business" didn't last long. :)

Vivid tale with subtle subtexts!

Yvonne Osborne said...

Nara,
Thanks. That was an underlying theme.

Galen,
Thank you so much. My Dad still has his boomerang....just sits up on a bookshelf and no one dare touch it. I can't throw for shit either! I appreciate you.

HA,
Thank you!

Tony,
Thanks! I'm glad.

Mary,
No it isn't. I'm surprised though that I haven't yet found one person who can do it. Thank you.

Liv2write,
Thank you.I can't always pull it off.

Razz,
And thank you too! I appreciate it.

Sarah,
Hi! And thanks a bunch.

Lydia,
Thank you!! Yes, I love twilight, especially in the summer, my favorite time. And thanks for sharing the story. I loved it...the idea of a toy business.

John,
Thank you so much. I appreciate it and value this feedback immensely.

You always have the best photos!! And I love the emotions you evoke in such few words :) I hope these 2 do well!!

Yvonne Osborne said...

Jemi,
Thank you so much. I've started to use only my own photos, which are far from professional but are good enough. About these two...hmmm, the jury is still out on that, I mean, their story is only a rough draft of an idea!

Hi Ethan!
Thank you. I like your little pop-ins. Hope all is well out there in California. We're having a real winter here. Something to write about!
