The Brothers and the Shrew

The brother is back.
His stuff fills the garage—
styrofoam take-out on the table.
Brothers who shake hands and don’t hug,
who talk about the weather
and act like they don’t care.
Her husband acts like his brother
when he’s in town.
They lie on the couch and watch TV.
It’s them against her.
Brothers.

It's time for a snapshot, a peek through the open window, a captured moment in time. I thought I was going to write something for Earth Day but then I thought every day should be Earth Day and Brothers wanted out for the weekend. They wanted to raise a little hell. If you or anyone you know has written a Friday Flash 55, go tell Mr. Knowitall, known to some as the G-Man.

Do you suppose it's the pack mentality? I loved this.
My 55 is here on Friday morning

Brothers speak a silent language born of years of shouting at each other.

I like this.

That's family!

G-Man,
Channeling you? Hmmm. Well I must say, I don't think I'd met you yet round Christmas time. I've only been channeling you for about 5 weeks now. And you'll miss me when I'm gone.

Sheri,
Thanks so much, but I don't do chick flicks. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is it for tonight! Enjoy your weekend too.

Karen,
Thanks so much for coming over to tell me so. I appreciate it.

Enchanted,
The pack mentality applies. Good one. Thanks!

Patti,
Hi! That's great. I love it. Thanks for visiting.

Jinksy,
Yes, unfortunately it is. And some families are more disparate than others. Thanks.

Jo,
Thanks so much!!

Brian,
Really? That surprises me. I'm glad you let it go. Thanks.

i think you need to do some shopping. even if all you do is look and try things on -- that and chocolate work for me!!!

This is so awesome, you've captured the nature of many brothers in so few words, right down to the instant character change.

Another well done 55. You are amazing at writing so much so succinctly.

Mayowa said...

Well done!

My brother and I are just like this when we hang out. Lots of beating on chests, polishing our clubs and yelling Uga Buga over and over again.

Travener said...

Brothers...indeed. I have one, unfortunately.

Jesse,
Hi! Thanks for commenting. Fortunately, this is fiction. I don't need another reason to eat chocolate and drink wine!

Peter,
Thank you so much for the encouragement.

Cat,
Thanks. Your comments always pick me up!

Mayowa,
Thank you! Yeah...why do you guys do that??

Trav,
Hello there. Glad to see you this morning. I have one brother too. Of course, that's a different chemistry. But me and my sisters.... look out world! Thanks for commenting.

I love this. And I continue to be amazed at what you can convey with 55. :)

And then they watch sports and scratch, right?

SandyCarlson said...

Men. They do the hanging out thing better than women, I do. I think because they have so many common languages to choose from--baseball, basketball, football....

Hugs! Believe it or not, I have two brothers and we hug when we see each other. I guess it's because my family lives all over the country, and does not get together very much. But when we do, it's like we never left home.

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

You nailed that one! Happy weekend to you.

Ah men. No gettin' around it. We love them, and they are annoying. I'm sure it goes the other way as well. Without these thorns in the rose, what would we blog about?

:)

Yvonne Osborne said...

Sarahjayne,
Thank you. Very much.

Mojo,
Of course they do. And they don't even care if anyone is watching. I kinda envy that level of comfort with oneself. Thanks!

Sandy,
Hi! Yes, they have so many important things to talk about, along with the weather!

Buz,
I'm happy to hear that. Who gets tired of hugs? I agree....when my sibs and I get together we all revert back to our childhood, like we never left. Thanks for being here.

Tricia,
Thank you very very much!!

W & W,
Ha! right you are. If it weren't for men... actually I can't even complete that thought!

Thanks!!

This is spot-on, as usual. I really look forward to Fridays to see what you're going to come up with. (technically, I'm writing this on Sunday). Brothers. yeah.

Yvonne Osborne said...

Sarah,
That is so sweet of you. I think that's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me here. I needed that. Thanks.

Mayowa said...

I dunno...primal instinct? A man wants to be a man sometimes. Other times he wants to watch Gossip Girl reruns.

Yvonne Osborne said...

Mayowa,
Ha! You just gave me a smile. So thanks a bunch. I see you're smiling back.
