Having suffered a tangle of weeds
as the grass shrivels and dies
their shoulders emerge
pink, golden and red.
Breeching the glacier-laid loam
they broaden and grow
sweeter for frost
and the equinox sun.
Come see my beets
like rosy-cheeked girls
in red skirts and pink scarves
reclusive and shy
as the red-breasted finch
that flees from the jay.
But I'm glad beets aren't blue.
Aren't you?
A little fun for the turning of the sun. And for open link night at dVerse the Poet's Pub

I love this. Yes Redbeets must be red!
What a wonderful smile this offers to the heart. Loved it Yvonne! 🙂
Don't care WHAT color they are; I ain't eating 'em.
The poem's delicious, though. Thanks.
Blue beets would be strange... but maybe red ones are too, we have just gotten used to them being red.
Brought a warm smile to my face thanks :)
This is absolutely beautiful!!
I love beets and now you make me want them, fresh from the earth. Lovely and fun.
I'm with you! I'm glad beets aren't blue. 🙂

Dwru, Agreed! Thanks for commenting.
I'm a big fan of roasted beets, but yeah, blue ones would be weird. Nicely done!
Christopher,
Roasted beets are the sweetest. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Yes! Challenged to describe their ruby round bodies more royal than rosy more burgundy than blush...
Thanks everyone. You folks at dVerse are the best on the net!
Now I'm craving beets! On the bbq with some balsamic vinegar and then sprinkled with feta! Yum!!
Good luck to you and your daughter with nano!! Have all the fun and ignore all the pressure!
Blue beets, yikes. Just wanted to let you know that the JM word list went up yesterday, The "delay" post was from the day before and i have deleted it, since the prompt has been posted. Sorry for any confusion.
