An excerpt from Black River
As Boyd started back across the wintering field, a story came to him for his mother that wouldn’t have anything to do with the family across the road. Nothing to do with the daughter he wasn’t supposed to be seeing who convinced him to drive her brother across the bridge into Canada. Nothing to do with any of that.
He could see the red and blue lights in his peripheral
vision, and his stomach hurt. Was he an accessory? Sure, he was. And what if
they spotted him out here in this wide-open field with a gun? He realized what a fool he was. A fool for
Maggie, from the first time she came across the road in her wraparound skirt
and asked for help. If she’d asked him to drive her brother into the boreal
forest of Canada last night, he would have done that too.
